Located in northeastern Sardinia, La Maddalena is the largest island in its namesake archipelago and the only one permanently inhabited. This slice of paradise offers over 40 kilometers of scenic roads, showcasing rugged coastlines, bays, coves, and beaches of extraordinary beauty.

Defined by its granite rocks and porphyry shaping the coastal landscape, La Maddalena also features hills blanketed with Mediterranean scrub in its interior. The island serves as the heart of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park and is home to its administrative center.

How to Reach La Maddalena

By Air and Sea
 

Olbia’s airport and port are the main gateways for visitors heading to La Maddalena, located about 50 km from the port of Palau. From Palau, ferries operate frequent daily connections to the island, ensuring quick and easy access to the archipelago.

 

An efficient bus service operated by ARST connects Olbia to Palau, with tickets available at ticket offices or through vending machines at the airport. From Palau, the ferry service ensures direct access to La Maddalena.

Dream Beaches: Discovering the Gems of La Maddalena

Cala Coticcio

Also known as “Tahiti” for its crystal-clear waters, Cala Coticcio is one of the most stunning beaches on the island. This natural pool can be reached either by sea, through organized excursions, or by land, following a dirt trail that requires the accompaniment of an authorized park guide.

Porto della Madonna

Located between the islands of Razzoli, Santa Maria, and Budelli, the Porto della Madonna is a true natural wonder: a pristine natural pool with crystal-clear waters and vibrant hues ranging from turquoise to azure. This spot is considered one of the most breathtaking locations in the entire archipelago.

Cala Francese

This beach, located on the southern side of the island, is distinguished by an abandoned granite quarry that gives it a unique atmosphere. Cala Francese is accessible via a path along the Padule waterfront and offers a spectacular landscape where the colors of nature blend harmoniously.

Spiaggia della Testa del Polpo

This beach is named after a large rock with a distinctive shape resembling an octopus’s head. Located on the southern part of the island, Testa del Polpo is a captivating spot featuring fine white sand and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing in a postcard-perfect setting.
