Cape Caccia

Capo Caccia

A Natural Masterpiece of Cliffs and Underwater Caves

Located in the northwestern part of Sardinia, Capo Caccia is a stunning limestone promontory renowned for its sheer cliffs, enchanting caves, and remarkable marine biodiversity. Here, nature unveils breathtaking landscapes, with vertical walls plunging into the deep blue, submerged and aerial caves, and precious coral-covered seabeds. With its massive rock formations sculpted by time, Capo Caccia is one of the most captivating destinations for nature and sea enthusiasts. Easily accessible from Alghero, this site offers unparalleled views and a range of activities for those eager to explore Sardinia's most authentic and untamed beauty.

The Caves of Capo Caccia: Between Neptune and Nereo

Among the main attractions of Capo Caccia are the Neptune’s Caves, accessible via the iconic Escala del Cabiròl—a panoramic staircase of 654 steps carved into the cliffs—or by boat from Alghero or Cala Dragunara. Inside, visitors are greeted by an incredible underground landscape, adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and a striking internal lake.

Next to Neptune’s Cave, diving enthusiasts can explore the Nereo Cave, the largest underwater cave in Europe, accessible at various depths. This fascinating 350-metre underwater route offers an unforgettable experience through tunnels and submerged chambers teeming with marine life.

In addition to these renowned caves, Capo Caccia is home to other hidden wonders such as the Giglio Cave, Pozzo Cave, and the Blue Tunnel, which traverses the promontory between Cala della Barca and Cala Puntetta, offering spectacular underwater passages.

The Capo Caccia Lighthouse: Italy's Tallest Lighthouse

Atop the Capo Caccia promontory stands Italy's tallest lighthouse, inaugurated in 1864. This impressive three-story white structure, protected by a Faraday cage against lightning, is topped by a 24-metre tower which, combined with the underlying cliff, reaches a total height of 186 metres above sea level. Its rotating lantern, visible from great distances, has guided vessels across the Gulf of Porto Conte for over a century.

The lighthouse is a historic landmark and a must-see for visitors to the area, offering breathtaking views and unforgettable sunsets.

Cala Inferno: The Wild Charm of the Mistral Wind

Cala Inferno, located opposite the island of Foradada, is a small cove that stands as one of the most striking natural wonders of Capo Caccia. Its name, tied to the power of waves reaching up to 20 metres high when the Mistral wind blows, suggests a rugged and untamed spot. However, Cala Inferno reveals its true charm in summer, when the waters become calm and crystal clear, showcasing a seabed in shades of green and turquoise.

The cove is made up of smooth white pebbles, offering a rare opportunity to experience the unspoiled and wild nature of Sardinia’s coast in an environment that is as awe-inspiring as it is serene.
